If you’ve never been to Valdez please allow me to recommend a visit. I’m told my first one occurred before the ol’ memory banks started recording, and I definitely recall enjoying spending the summer of 1989 in Alaska’s “Gateway to the Interior,” despite the circumstances that drew me there. During the intervening years I’ve kept my eye on a community that’s played a remarkable role in Alaska’s history. Aside from its role as the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) it’s a fascinating part of Alaska and, among other things, I couldn’t help noticing when my former high school principal, Lance Bowie, was hired as the local school district Superintendent.
In following events in Valdez I repeatedly noted another name popping up frequently – Bert Cottle. Bert’s been involved in Valdez’s public affairs in numerous ways, including service as Chief of Police (8 years), on the City Council (11 years) and as mayor (10 years). These days he’s running for the legislature and, given his distinguished service in local government, I volunteered to host a fundraiser for him. So if you’d like to get to know Bert a little better, and perhaps learn a little more about Valdez, feel free to drop by on Wednesday. Details are as follows:
When: Wednesday, August 11, 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm
Where: my house, 918 R Street – additional parking is available on 9th Avenue
Why: because the decisions made by our state government have a profound effect on local affairs. Legislators with an understanding of local governance are important to the well-being of our communities.
I look forward to seeing you then!
Regards,
Patrick
